Sight Word Soup—Write sight words on noodles (Rigatoni works
well) in permanent marker. Put word noodles in a pot. Have
child scoop out noodles. Read the words on the noodles. Write
them on a piece of paper. Put unknown words back in the pot.
Sight Word Search—Walk around the house and look for sight words.
Use a clipboard and record the words found.
Spill a Sight Word—Make a set of sight word cards and put them in
a container. The first player shakes out the cards and reads
all the words that land face up. Put the remaining cards (the
cards the first player didn’t know and the cards that were face
down) back in the container. The next player does the same thing.
Keep going until all the words have been read.
Sing the Sight Words—Put 26 sight words in a row. Sing the words
to the tune of the alphabet song or Row, Row, Row Your Boat.
Catch a Sight Word—Use masking tape to label a beach ball with the
sight words. Toss the ball and have the child read the words
that their hands touch.
Sight Word Sentences—Write words on cards and add a few nouns. Have
child build sentences using the words. Be sure to include cards
with . ! ? too.
Quick Write—See how many times your child can write the sight word in
one minute. Sand timers work well.
Guess My Word—Cut up each target sight word and put the letters
in a baggy. Have the child take out the letters and reconstruct
the sight word.
Scrambled Words—Write a sentence using a target sight word. Scramble
the sight word and underline it. Have the child use letter cards
to unscramble the word. (They won’t need the cards after a while.)
Cootie—Write several words on strips of paper and put them in a
bag. Pull out a strip and write part of the word on apiece of
paper. Have child guess the letters to complete the word. For
each wrong guess, draw a body part on the cootie. (head, abdomen,
thorax, 6 legs, and 2 antennae) The idea is to guess the word
before the cootie is complete.
Word Links—Have the child write a sight word on a paper strip and make
a link. Write the sight word in a sentence on another strip
and hook them together. Do the same for several words. (good
holiday activity)
BINGO—Write a sight word in each box of a grid. Write the same words
on cards and put them in a bag. Pull out a card and read the
word. Have child put a penny (or anther marker) on the word.
When the child has covered a row in any direction, s/he wins.
You can play blackout where all squares must be covered to win.
