February 15, 2005

Dear Friends,

I want to provide you with an update regarding the fiscal state of the District for the upcoming 2005-2006 school year.

As you are probably already aware, for the fifth year in a row, the Cotati-Rohnert Park Unified School District must reduce our budget for the coming fiscal year. Over the past four years it has been necessary to reduce over $8.2 million from our budget due to declining student enrollments, and reduced State funding.

Our shrinking revenues necessitate additional budget reductions. Without new unrestricted revenues we must take immediate steps to balance our budget.

We have been alerted by the Sonoma County Office of Education, SCOE, that we must take immediate action. In a letter dated February 7, 2005 from the SCOE Director of Fiscal Services,

“The District must make necessary budget reductions in 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 in order to meet its financial condition…approximately $875,000 reductions are needed….By the Second Interim Report, a thorough analysis of the budget and a detailed multi-year projection will be needed to make the determination of the budget reductions for 2005-2006”

Based on our current fiscal projections, the Board must approve reductions for the 2005-2006 school year. A summary of proposed budget reductions follows this letter.

Our Second Interim Report must be approved by our Board and submitted to SCOE no later than March 15, 2005. In order to meet this deadline, the Board must take action on proposed budget cuts at their meeting scheduled for Tuesday, February 22, 2004. This meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. at Creekside Middle School.

Additional information regarding the District’s adopted budget and fiscal reports can be found on this website at http://www.crpusd.sonoma.edu/business.html

Sincerely,

Michael Watenpaugh
Superintendent
