La Fiesta School Website
Description
In the fall of 1991, La Fiesta was given a grant from the Tarlton Foundation for an integrated curriculum on "Oceans". This $5,000 grant provided approximately four days of intensive, joyous time of learning, doing, and sharing about the oceans of the earth. La Fiesta has continued with the study of our oceans as an addition to our science curriculum and has expanded the curriculum and experiences offered to students. These activities are funded by SIP and an annual silent ocean theme cake auction. In keeping with this theme students and staff decided to select a new mascot and school colors that reflect the school's commitment to the ocean environment / ecosystem at the end of the 1996-97 school year. The stingray was chosen.

School-to-Career
Students as early as third grade learn that applications, letters of interest, interviews, and job performance are necessary parts of working at La Fiesta. All Student Conflict Managers (grades 3-5), Gardening Assistants (grades 3-5) and Office Workers must submit an application which includes a personal letter stating why they wish to have the particular position. Students then must be present for a small group interview conducted by the adult coordinator. It is becoming more common for students to make sure they are well groomed and dressed in their best for an interview. The anticipation while they wait to hear from the adult coordinator ("boss") is real. If job performance is below expectations, the adult coordinator will work with the student to improve and, if necessary, allow a month's leave of absence in order to decide whether the student wants the position or not.
A real life experience is created for our School-to-Career students starting from the moment of interest to the retirement party at the end of the year. Kindergarten through second grade students look forward to their chance to work at school.
