Fifth Grade Curriculum
English - Language Arts

 

The grade five language arts curriculum emphasizes systematic, explicit skills instruction in reading and writing. Students read and comprehend a wide variety of grade-level appropriate literature. Students learn the writing process, writing strategies, and writing applications with an emphasis on written and oral English language conventions and correct spelling. Some examples of specific concepts and skills which students are to master are provided in the topic areas listed below:


READING:

Word Recognition, Vocabulary, and Concept Development

  • use root words and affixes and word origins to analyze and understand the meaning of complex roots
  • explain the meaning of figurative language and literacy devices in text (e.g., imagery, metaphor, symbolism)
  • identify and explain synonyms, antonyms and homonyms

Comprehension

  • identify facts that support main ideas, themes and concepts in text
  • make inferences and conclusions about text and support with examples
  • differentiate between facts, supported inferences and opinions in text
  • demonstrate an understanding of sequential/chronological order and cause/effect
  • summarize and identify the main problem or conflict and how it is resolved
  • analyze the characteristics of poetry, drama, fiction, and non-fiction as literacy forms chosen by an author for a specific purpose
  • distinguish between different types of reading/writing: fiction and non-fiction
  • interpret information from diagrams, charts, and graphs
  • identify author’s purpose in writing a selection

Fluency

  • read numerous books to build fluency and comprehension
  • read text aloud with fluency and accuracy and with appropriate pacing, information, and expression

WRITING:

Application

  • write research reports, narratives, essays, and persuasive compositions
  • use stages of the writing process
  • write a multiple paragraph composition with clear topic, ideas/events in sequences, transitional expressions and summary
  • use correct English conventions
  • write personal and formal letters, thank you notes and invitations using correct form

Research and Technology

  • use reference materials to aid writing
  • use word-processing skills and publishing programs

Grammar, Punctuation, and Capitalization

  • identify and correctly use verbs and subject, objective, and possessive pronouns
  • identify and correctly use verbs that are often misused (lie/lay, sit/set, rise/raise)
  • use commas to set off explanatory phrases
  • use quotation marks around words of a speaker
  • use quotation marks, underlining or italics for titles of books, poems, songs and stories
  • use correct capitalization and punctuation

Spelling

  • spell assigned spelling words correctly
  • apply knowledge of word patterns to correctly spell words
  • apply spelling skills to written work
  • spell roots, suffixes, prefixes, contractions correctly

Penmanship

  • use neat, legible manuscript and cursive writing

LISTENING AND SPEAKING:

  • deliver focused, coherent presentations that convey ideas clearly
  • listen, make inferences and draw conclusions from an oral report
  • clarify and support spoken ideas with evidence and examples
  • analyze media as sources for information, entertainment, persuasion, interpretation of events and transmission of culture
  • demonstrate a command of standard English when speaking
  • evaluate and summarize information presented
