Fifth
Grade Curriculum
Math
| By the end of fifth
grade, students increase their facility with the four basic
arithmetic operations applied to positive and negative numbers,
fractions and decimals. They know and use formulas to determine
the volume of simple geometric figures. Students know the concept
of angle measurement and use a protractor and compass to solve
problems. They use grids, tables, graphs, and charts to record
and analyze data. The following are some examples of skills
and concepts developed in the areas of: |
Number
Sense
- add/subtract/multiply/divide,
and problem solve using large and small numbers, including negative
numbers, fractions and decimals
- order and compare fractions
and decimals
- use exponents to show
multiples of a factor
- interpret percents as
part of a hundred; find decimal and percent equivalents for common
fractions
Algebra, Functions and
Patterns
- write and evaulate simple
algebraic equations in one variable by substitution
- identify and graph ordered
pairs in the four quadrants
- use information from
a graph to solve problems
Measurement and Geometry
- use formulas to determine
volume of simple geometric figures
- use standard measuring
units for length and area
- compare properties and
relationships between plane and solid geometric figures
- measure angles
Statistics, Data Analysis
and Probability
- display, analyze, compare
and interpret different data sets
- compute, compare mean,
median, and mode
- choose appropriate graphs
to show information
Mathematical Reasoning
- differentiate between
relevant and irrelevant information
- use problem solving techniques
in new situations
- express solutions clearly
and logically by using the appropriate mathematical notation,
terms, and clear language
