Third
Grade Curriculum
Math
| By the end of third
grade, students deepen their understanding of place value and
their underderstanding of, and skill with, addition, subtraction,
multiplication, and division of whole numbers. They estimate,
measure, and describe objects in space. They use patterns to
help solve problems. The following are some examples of skills
and concepts developed in the areas of: |
Number
Sense
- understand place value
to 10,000
- add and subtract multi-digit
numbers
- know multiplication to
10 x 10
- multiply and divide single
and multi-digit numbers
- add and subtract simple
fractions
Algebra, Functions and
Patterns
- select the correct mathematical
operational and relational symbol to make an equation true (e.g.,
4 ? 3 = 12)
- express simple unit conversions
in symbolic form (e.g., # feet = # inches ÷ 12)
- solve problems involving
numeric equations and inequalities
- extend and reorganize
linear patterns
Measurement and Geometry
- choose appropriate units
and tools for measurement
- describe and compare
plane and solid geometric figures
Statistics, Data Analysis
and Probability
- make simple math predictions
- read and create graphs
and charts
Mathematical Reasoning
- use a variety of methods
such as words, numbers, symbols, charts, graphs, diagrams, and
models to explain mathematical reasoning
- Express the solution
clearly and logically using appropriate mathematical notations
and support solutions with evidence
- analyze and solve word
problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
